Carey Davis, a first-year free agent, has supplanted Dan Kreider as the No. 1 fullback and will start in the season opener against the Cleveland Browns.
Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians confirmed the move today after the Steelers finished practice at their South Side facility.
It is possible Kreider, the starter for the past five seasons, might be deactivated against the Browns.
"Everything is week to week, but he will be the fullback," Arians said of Davis. "He's doing a nice job for us."

The Dawg Pound in Cleveland may not be a fan of Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, but the city's police dogs will be.
Roethlisberger's foundation is donating an explosion detection dog, a training course and a canine protection vest to the Cleveland Division of Police's canine unit.
Roethlisberger, who grew up in Findlay, Ohio, learned that Cleveland's only explosive detecting canine, Rex, is 11 years old and nearing retirement age. The department did not have the funds to purchase a new dog.
"Born and raised in the state of Ohio, I have always held the deepest respect for the efforts of our police and fire departments," said Roethlisberger, who has become friends with some state and local officers in Pittsburgh.
Roethlisberger often wears a Pennsylvania State Police ballcap in honor of his late friend, state police Cpl. Joseph Pokorny, who was slain while on duty in 2005.
Roethlisberger's foundation will distribute grants to the police and fire departments in Pittsburgh and the surrounding area and those of each Steelers regular season away opponent. The first such grant was given last year to Findlay's police department to replace its service dog.

PITTSBURGH — The Steelers today released 23 players and made a trade with the Atlanta Falcons in order to trim their roster to the NFL's league minimum of 53 players.
The players released from the Steelers roster include WR Dallas Baker, TE Cody Boyd, OT Jason Capizzi, TE Jon Dekker, RB Verron Haynes, CB Chidi Iwuoma, CB Jovon Johnson, FB John Kuhn, S Mike Lorello, CB Anthony Madison, CB Grant Mason, DE Ryan McBean, DE Shaun Nua, C Chukky Okobi, DT Scott Paxson, C Marvin Philip, QB Bryan Randall, LB Ron Stanley, OG Cameron Stephenson, OT Brandon Torrey, WR Gerran Walker, LB Rian Wallace and WR Walter Young.
Additionally, the Steelers traded a 2008 conditional draft pick to the Atlanta Falcons for return specialist/cornerback Allen Rossum. Rossum (5-8, 178), a 10-year veteran from Notre Dame, was originally drafted in the third round (85th overall) of the 1998 by the Philadelphia Eagles. He then was traded to the Green Bay Packers and spent two seasons (2000-01) with the team before signing with the Falcons as an unrestricted free agent on March 13, 2002.
Rossum, a 2005 Pro Bowl selection as a special teams returner, holds the Falcons record for career punt return yards (1,723), career kickoff return yards (5,489) and career punt returns for touchdowns (2).
All NFL teams may sign up to eight players to their practice squad after noon on Sunday, Sept. 2.

Going Retro Once Again...
Check out these pics I found from the Steelers training for the 1996 season. These were taken at Frostburg State University in Frostburg, Md which is around 35 minutes east of the lake, and 15 minutes west of Cumberland, MD. This school is located in the heart of Steelers Country in Western Maryland. The Redskins organization left their summer home of Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA to try a different venue for a couple of years. It simply did not work. This is "Steelers Country"! In these pics you can make out a very young Coach Bill Cowher, Chad Brown, Jerry O(Olsavsky), Joel Steed, the much maligned Kordell Stewart, Ernie Mills, Levon Kirkland, Greg Lloyd, "first year Steeler" Jerome Bettis(look at how thin the Bus is!), the late Justin Strzelczyk, Darren Perry, Rod Woodson's head(right behind Perry), and Yancy Thigpen.

The Terrible Towel

What Is Up With The Mascot?
Chris Davis forwarded me a pic this week of Hines Ward and Steely McBeam. This only made me shake my head once again. We are being made fun of on a the national front. I am not a huge fan of this at all. This morning on the Post Gazette they ran a piece from Steeler fans tailgating yesterday evening. I think this is a good representation of how we all feel.
I May Have A New Favorite Steeler Player...
Brian Koch from Wilmington, DE alerted me to a recent interview by Brett Kiesel on DVE. "Kiesel the Diesel". I can not figure out how to get a quick link for you to click on, so you will have to click on the link to the right for "DVE Radio" and then look for "Training Camp 2007 Brett Kiesel Interview". I already liked this guy, but this even made him more down to earth and likable for me.
Another Steelers Nation Wedding!
Congrats to Ben & Crystal Pugh from Elkton, MD. Several of us headed to Mystic, CT on the weekend of July 15th to celebrate the wedding of Crystal Delacruz & Ben Pugh. Hats off to the newlyweds... Check out the second pic. Crystal was very proud of her "Steelers Garter". Ben's comment was; "Great, that will be on the internet!".
